A Walk in the Dolomites

Introduction

Monday - the Tre Cime Circuit

Today started with a bus ride to the car park at Rifugio Auronzo for our walk round the Tre Cime di Lavaredo. And we made a mistake - we did not ask the time of the last bus back. This led to some grief later, of which you can read HERE.

The crowd on the bus was a foretaste of the crowds we would encounter on our walk - a contrast to the quietness of all our other walks. But the reason for the crowds was obvious - the sensational beauty of the Tre Cime!

We had got an inkling of this before we had even left our hotel. The photo below is of the Tre Cime from the front of the Hotel Lavaredo.

Photo 1:- Les Tre Cime di Lavaredo from the Hotel Lavaredo. The Rifugio Auronzo is just right of centre.

On leaving the bus we followed the crowds. We went anti-clockwise with many pauses for photography. Mostly we followed the main path but with some variations. The captions of the photos will tell the story.

Photo 3:- Taken just east of the Tre Cime. The Rifugio Locatelli in its spectacular location.

Photo 4:- From the scree path above the tourist route. Les Tre Cime cast giant shadows.

Photo 5:- Chris at the entrance to a WW1 lookout shelter. It is hard to imagine battles being fought in such a beautiful place.

Photo 6:- The Rifugio Locatelli where we had lunch. Rather nice but it took a long time.

Photo 7:- In the midst of this mountain grandeur a lush alpine meadow, full of cows being driven mad by the never ceasing sound of cow bells!

Photo 8:- Another view of the Tre Cime.

We decided that we would take the bus back to Misurina so we continued our circuit to the where our morning bus had dropped us off. And discovered that the last bus to Misurina had gone! We had spent too long over lunch and had not hurried over the second part of the route. The rest of the saga can be read HERE.
