Below are photographs of the Avon Thrust.

A close up of where the thrust meets the Portway. The geology has been inserted by Richard Arthur.
Another view of the thrust with Richard Arthur’s annotations. The stairs at the lower left are the end of a path from the Promenade in Clifton.
A wider view of the thrust. Photographed from across the river.
The wider view of the thrust with the memoir’s geology added.
Another wide view of the thrust showing its relationship to Bridge Valley Road, the Suspension Bridge and the repeat of the Hotwells Limestone Group.
A close up of the thrust, showing the drag fold.
The thrust, the drag fold and The Portway/Bridge Valley Road Junction.
Close-up of the shattered rock just below the thrust. The amount of masonry is an indication of the degree of shattering. Just a few metres within the cliff is a tunnel of the closed Bristol Port Railway and Pier. A challenging place to have a tunnel!
Photo taken from the footpath down from The Promenade in Clifton. Underneath the thrust. Note the overgrown tunnel entrance of the, now closed, Hotwells – Avonmouth Railway. The previous photographs show the difficulty of keeping the roadway safe. One imagines that keeping the railway safe was also considerable. The railway continued into second tunnel just behind us and this led to rockfalls and the temporary closure of Bridge Valley Road – see HERE
