Monday 16th October
(The link above takes you to all the photos I took on the 16th October. There are a lot!)
After checking out of Onguma we were soon at the Namutoni Gate of Etosha National Park. We were scarcely through the gate when we saw our first elephant of the day. It was quite impressive.
We drove into Namutoni village and paid our visitors fee and continued westwards.
Our next stop was the Goas waterhole where we saw the greatest gathering of elephants of our whole trip. There were at least 25 elephants of all ages and sizes gathered at the waterhole enjoying the water.
The Etosha elephants are at a smaller risk of poaching than those in other parts of Africa. Because of the challenging conditions they live, in their tusks are rather small and so the elephants value to a poacher is equally small.
There were also some unusual antelopes.
We then had a tour of various other waterholes but saw nothing as fascinating as the Goas waterhole – until we got back to Okaukejo. We signed in and found which chalet we would be staying in. Unpacked and went to the waterhole.
And found elephants having a good time!
But dinner time was approaching so there was only time for a photo of some zebras.
It was quite dark when we got back to the waterhole and the animals were on the far side and photography would not have provided good results.
So off to bed and look forward to Mowani.
